Development Programmes

World Netball has developed a number of projects to address the needs of specific communities. Two of these, the GOAL project in India and the Netball Safaris in Africa, have won international awards.

We work closely with a variety of international, regional and local partners to provide netball-specific knowledge and expertise to development programmes.

GOAL

The Goal programme, developed by INF (now World Netball) and Standard Chartered Bank, is a unique multi-stakeholder partnership which aims to empower young women in disadvantaged areas in India to become leaders in their communities. GOAL uses netball as a tool for positive individual development and social inclusion.

Standard Chartered Bank and the INF started working with grassroots non-governmental organisations, 60 schools and 15 colleges in Delhi, India to deliver the GOAL project to 3,500 young women. Work has now extended the scheme into Mumbai and Chennai and now into other countries around the world.

The programme enhances existing community programmes; contributes to the Government of India’s aims to empower young women and complemented its efforts to promote sport, and in particular netball, in the build up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The Australian Sports Commission and Netball Australia are now also supporting the GOAL project.

Netball Safaris

Bringing women’s sport to communities in Africa, Netball Safaris have addressed a clear need for a basic level introduction to the sport, both for leaders and for participants. The model has evolved since its instigation in 2009, and includes training of volunteers – mainly teachers, who then lead netball sessions for children and young people, linking in to a festival-competition at the end. These leaders then return to deliver netball in their schools and local communities. Many have benefited from this approach including over 700 teacher/volunteers and over 900 participants.

The Safari model has been very effective to date and is reviewed every year to ensure it still meets the identified needs of each community and target community. Aspects of the model have also been used for other development projects.

World Netball Netball Safaris have been supported by funding from UK Sport International and the Commonwealth Games Federation as well as INF Net Effect Funding.

UK Sport – International Development through Excellence and Leadership in Sport (IDEALS)

IDEALS Professional was developed by UK Sport to offer university students, staff and sport development practitioners a chance to broaden their professional experience, increase their global awareness and enhance leadership while helping build the capacity of local NGBs, sports governing bodies and local organisations involved in sport.

INF worked closely with UK Sport and Loughborough University on the IDEALS Professional programme in Zambia. Contributing to the selection, induction and support of the professionals involved to enhance the development of Netball in Zambia.  This programme has now concluded.

Peace and Sport

The INF (now World Netball) partnered with Peace and Sport to introduce netball to a new audience in the youth centres of Burundi and beyond, using the game as a beacon for peace over a three year period.

Based around our development model, a number of youth centre leaders from Burundi and Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were trained to deliver netball to young people. The ‘train the tutor’ model increases sustainability, ensuring a long-term impact by building in-country capacity, to deliver long after the original project is complete. Netball sessions are now being run in the youth centre of Gihanga.

Women and girls who normally spend their days looking after siblings were attracted to become physically active through the netball sessions, which also allowed for broader education to take place, contributing to the empowerment of those women. Alongside this, the INF’s Africa Regional Development Manager established good working relations with key stakeholders, with a view to establishing a national netball association for Burundi, creating valuable partnerships with the army and University of Burundi.

The project won a JAPPO Award in the Sports Humanitarian Category at the 2012 Africa International Sports Convention (CISA) for making a ‘significant contribution to peace and the promotion of sport in Africa’.
