Australia and England make winning starts

Over the weekend Durban hosted a whole lot of action from the 4 world class sides competing in the Quad Series. England made a winning start to the Quad Series as they beat South Africa 60-55 after extra time and Australia showed their class in the opener of the series beating main rivals New Zealand 57 – 50.

On the opening day Australia defeated New Zealand with a 57-50 victory. Caitlin Thwaites scored 35 points on 90 per cent shooting for the Diamonds as they got off to a flying start. The Diamonds went into half-time leading 30-23 but the Silver Ferns came back in the second half, scoring seven goals to two to open the third quarter, however the Diamonds proved too much of a challenge and the world number 1’s gained their first win in the Quad Series.

The second match of the Quad Series saw a thrilling contest ending level at 48-48 after the first four quarters but a dominant extra-time from Tracey Neville’s England team, underpinned by a composed display from the returning Helen Housby ensured the Roses started with a victory. But the hosts made them work for it, fighting back brilliantly from an 11-goal half-time deficit with a brilliant display in front of a delighted home crowd to force the additional 14 minutes.

England were able to keep their cool and Helen Housby’s goal late in the first period of extra-time gave them the three-goal cushion and control as South Africa were forced to chase the game with England finally coming out on top.

The Australian Diamonds will take on the hosts on the 31st January at 19:00.
