Dorothy ‘Dot’ McHugh OAM

It’s with great sadness we report that former INF Service Award recipient and INF General Secretary, Dorothy ‘Dot’ McHugh OAM, has passed away at the age of 93.

Dorothy’s remarkable passion and commitment to growing netball around the world spanned over 60 years.

Her first involvement in the sport was in the early 1940s as a player. Injury, however, prevented Dorothy to continue playing, which subsequently steered her into administration and officiating.

Dorothy held multiple executive positions at Netball New South Wales (NSW) where she would later be awarded Life Membership for her services.  She was Vice President in 1953, Secretary from 1954-1960, Insurance Officer during 1961-62, Treasurer in 1963 and Umpires Convenor from 1965-68.

In 1957, Dorothy earned her All Australian Umpires Award at Australia’s National Tournament. Dorothy represented NSW as delegate to Netball Australia for many years and was later recognised at national level when she was presented with the Netball Australia Service Award in 1974. Dorothy was inducted into the Netball Australia Hall of Fame in 2010.

Internationally, Dorothy was appointed General Secretary of the INF (then known as IFNA) in 1987, a position she held until 1991.  In 1995, Dorothy became the first NSW member to be awarded the INF Service Award.

Our thoughts are with Dorothy’s family and friends at this sad time.
