Malawi Queens announce squad for the Gold Coast

Malawi are no strangers to the Commonwealth stage. This will be their sixth appearance at the Games, having only missed one tournament since its inclusion in 1998.

An experienced squad has been selected for the Gold Coast, as nine out of the twelve athletes were present four years ago in Glasgow. Only three athletes within the squad will be making their inaugural appearance at a Commonwealth Games. They are Martha Dambo, Thandie Galleta and Bridget Kumwenda.

Star shooter, Mwai Kumwenda, was the top goal scorer four years ago in Glasgow with a total tally of 230 goals. Mwai currently plays her club netball in Australia with the Melbourne Vixens, so will be no stranger to the Australian crowds.

The Queens are currently in a training camp in New Zealand, ahead of the Taini Jamison Trophy in which they will compete in three matches against other Commonwealth Games qualifiers as part of a warm up for the Games. They will play games against New Zealand, Fiji and Jamaica. Their first game will be against fellow Pool B rivals, New Zealand, on 21st March.

First up for Malawi at the Gold Coast is a tie with England on the 6th of April. Elsewhere in Malawi’s group are; New Zealand, Scotland and Wales.
