Northern Ireland and Scotland Qualify for Netball World Cup 2019

Northern Ireland and Scotland have both qualified for the Netball World Cup 2019, following the Regional Qualifier – Europe in Perth, Scotland over the weekend.

Northern Ireland secured their qualification with a 57-42 victory over Wales on the Saturday afternoon.

Scotland’s 52-40 victory over Wales on Friday evening means they take the second place available for the Europe region, with Wales missing out after failing to win either of their two matches.

On the final day of competition, Scotland secured their second victory by defeating Northern Ireland 52-31.

Northern Ireland and Scotland will join England – who qualify automatically as host nation – for the 16-team tournament which takes place at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, part of the ACC Liverpool campus, from 12-21 July 2019.

Speaking after the game against Wales v Northern Ireland’s captain Caroline O’Hanlon said:

“There was a lot at stake – both teams were playing for their lives today really so I’m just relieved to get over the line.

“We knew if we went hard and played to our potential that we would get a result but Wales are a great team and we knew they’d put it up to us right to the very end.”

The remaining 13 teams will qualify through International Netball Federation (INF) world rankings and regional qualifying tournaments in the remaining four regions – Africa, Americas, Asia and Oceania. The final list of qualified teams will be confirmed officially by the INF in September 2018.
